Game of Thrones (GoT) Project

First, I want everyone to understand I do think GRR Martin can write well. The problem I have is that the further I read into the Song of Ice and Fire, the more horrified I became. The books were more and more full of rape and other horrible treatment of women. Honestly by the fourth book I had stopped reading the series, I liked the story but I hated the backdrop.

Then a year ago I went to Geek Girl Con (by the way one of the best cons I have ever been to) and I went to a panel about the troublesome nature of GRR Martin's writing. At this time HBO's series of Game of Thrones was incredibly popular so it had an even larger following. During this panel I had never heard males (and some females) defend the treatment of women in the series as the author was trying to be "realistic". Even when I pointed out that not everything in the series was realistic (such as walking undead, 700 foot tall walls, magic, and dragons). For some reason this never seemed to think in.

Fast forward a year and I continue to hear people say the HBO show isn't comprised of misogyny and and that women are given strong roles. I have heard several feminists themselves say this as well. I believe they are wrong, but I want to give it a chance. So I am going to do an episode by episode review of the Game of Thrones, detailing the strengths and weaknesses I see in its treatment of women, and if possible minorities.
